What do allergies look like in cats?
Cats rarely sneeze their allergies — they scratch them. Over-grooming until the belly or inner thighs go bald, scabby bumps along the neck and back, and chin acne are the classic picture. Fleas are the single commonest trigger in India, and a cat can be flea-allergic without you ever seeing a flea.

What is happening
Feline allergy shows itself through the skin and the grooming tongue. A cat that is itchy grooms harder, and the hair loss you notice is self-inflicted rather than falling out on its own.
Signs to watch for
- Symmetrical bald patches on the belly, inner thighs or forelegs
- Small crusty bumps along the spine and around the neck
- Grooming that has become constant, or hair in vomited pellets

- Keep every cat in the house on year-round vet-prescribed flea prevention
- Wash bedding weekly on a hot cycle and vacuum where the cat sleeps
- Switch from a plastic food bowl to ceramic or steel if the chin is spotty

The skin is broken, bleeding or infected, the hair loss is spreading fast, or your cat is grooming so hard it cannot settle — and always if there is any breathing difficulty.
In India specifically
Year-round warmth means fleas never get a seasonal break in most of India, so prevention has to be continuous rather than monsoon-only. Dust mites are a significant trigger in humid coastal homes. If your cat's itching worsens each time the fans and cupboards are cleaned, mention that to your vet — it is a useful clue.

Why is my cat's belly going bald?
Symmetrical hair loss on the belly and inner thighs is almost always over-grooming rather than hair falling out, and the usual driver is itch — most often flea allergy. Stress and urinary pain can also cause it. Your vet can tell the difference by examining the hair ends under a microscope.
Can I use a dog flea treatment on my cat?
Never. Many dog spot-ons contain permethrin, which is severely toxic to cats and kills them. Even applying it to an in-contact dog can poison a cat that grooms it. Use only a product labelled for cats, at the correct weight band.
My cat has black spots on his chin. What is that?
That is feline chin acne, and plastic food bowls are the commonest cause — the surface scratches and harbours bacteria. Switch to ceramic or stainless steel and wash it daily. If the chin becomes swollen, red or painful, it needs treatment.
Do indoor cats get fleas in India?
Yes. Fleas come in on shoes, on clothing, through window grilles and on any dog in the house. Indian cities have year-round flea pressure rather than a season, so indoor-only status is not protection, and vets here routinely find flea allergy in cats that have never been outside.
