Can fish have allergies, or is it the water?
Fish do not have allergies in the mammalian sense. What owners read as an allergic reaction — flicking, clamped fins, cloudy skin, sudden distress after a water change — is irritation from water chemistry or a chemical that entered the tank. Chlorine, soap residue, aerosols and medication overdoses are the usual sources.

What is happening
A fish sits in its environment and absorbs it across the gills and skin continuously. Anything dissolved in the water reaches the bloodstream directly, which is why household chemicals cause such rapid and dramatic signs — and why the response is always to correct the water, not to medicate the fish.
Signs to watch for
- Flicking and scraping against decor with no visible parasite
- Excess slime coat, cloudy or greyish patches on the skin
- Sudden distress, darting or gasping shortly after a water change or cleaning
What you can do
- Always dechlorinate replacement water and match its temperature
- Never clean tank equipment with soap or detergent — hot water and a dedicated sponge only
- Keep aerosols, room sprays, mosquito vaporisers and incense out of the tank room

Signs persist after a large water change and removal of chemical sources, or several fish deteriorate at once. Given how rare aquatic vets are in India, prioritise identifying what entered the water — that is nearly always the answer.
In India specifically
Municipal supply in Indian cities is chlorinated or chloraminated and varies in strength through the year, so the dose of dechlorinator that worked last month may be insufficient after a supply change. Mosquito vaporisers and agarbatti used in the same room as a tank are a frequent and rarely suspected source of slow poisoning — a covered tank and a different room for both is the simple fix.
Common questions
My fish went strange right after a water change. Why?
Three usual culprits: untreated tap water carrying chlorine, a temperature mismatch between old and new water, or too large a change at once. Dechlorinate, match temperature to within a degree or so, and keep routine changes to about a quarter of the volume.
Can room spray or mosquito repellent hurt my fish?
Yes. Aerosols and vaporised insecticides settle onto the water surface and dissolve in. A tank in a room where these are used regularly receives a continuous low dose. Cover the tank when spraying, or better, keep those products out of that room.
Is soap residue on a bucket really dangerous?
Very. Detergent is severely toxic to fish at concentrations far below what leaves a visible trace. Keep a bucket, net and sponge used only for the aquarium, and never wash them with soap — hot water alone is correct.
Why is my fish producing excess slime?
A thickened, cloudy slime coat is a protective response to something irritating the skin — poor water chemistry, a chemical exposure, or external parasites. Test the water first and consider what may have entered the tank in the last few days before reaching for a medication.
