How long can a cat safely go without eating?
Far less time than a dog. A cat that eats nothing for 24 hours is already at risk, and two to three days can trigger hepatic lipidosis — a liver condition that is itself life-threatening, and one overweight cats are most prone to. Appetite loss in a cat is never a wait-and-see situation.

What is happening
Cats are built to eat little and often, and their liver copes badly with a sudden fast. When a cat stops eating, the body mobilises fat faster than the liver can process it, which is why a short fast becomes a serious illness.
Signs to watch for
- Nothing eaten for 24 hours, or a marked drop over two or three days
- Sitting hunched, hiding, or losing interest in a favourite food
- Weight you can now feel over the spine and hips

In India specifically
Indian summers drive genuine seasonal appetite dips, which makes it easy to miss the start of something real. Feed in the cooler parts of the day and keep water fresh. Kidney disease is very common in Indian house cats from middle age onwards and often presents first as gradual appetite loss with increased thirst — worth asking for a blood and urine check in any cat over seven that goes off food.

Why is a cat not eating more serious than a dog not eating?
A cat's liver handles a sudden fast poorly. Body fat is mobilised faster than the liver can process it, causing hepatic lipidosis — fatty liver disease. It can develop within days, needs intensive treatment, and is most likely in exactly the overweight cats owners assume have reserves to spare.
My cat only eats treats now. What should I do?
Do not let treats replace meals — they are nutritionally incomplete and mask how little real food is going in. But a cat that eats nothing at all is worse than one eating something. Tell your vet exactly what and how much is being eaten, and stop guessing at home beyond 24 hours.
Can bad teeth stop a cat eating?
Yes, and it is one of the commonest causes. Resorptive lesions, which are very common in cats, are genuinely painful. Watch for dropping food, chewing on one side, drooling or turning away after one mouthful. A mouth examination should be part of any appetite-loss visit.
Is it normal for a cat to eat less in summer?
A modest dip in hot weather is normal, but do not use heat to explain away a real fast. The 24-hour rule still applies. If your cat is also hiding, lethargic or drinking noticeably more, that is illness rather than the season.
