What are the signs of allergies in dogs?
Dog allergies show up in the skin far more than the nose. Itchy paws, ears, belly and tail base, recurring ear infections on the same side, face rubbing and paws licked until they stain are the classic picture. Fleas, environmental pollens and a small number of food proteins cause most cases.

Flea and tick pressure in India is year-round in most cities rather than seasonal, so a monsoon-only prevention routine leaves a long window open. Dust mites in humid coastal homes and pollen from October and February flowering are the other frequent triggers. If your dog's flare-ups track the seasons, log the dates — that pattern is often the fastest route to identifying the trigger.

Is my dog allergic to chicken or rice?
Food allergy is real but far less common than owners assume — environmental and flea allergies account for most itching. Proving a food allergy needs a strict elimination diet for eight to twelve weeks with absolutely no other food, then a deliberate rechallenge. Switching brands casually proves nothing.
Why are my dog's paws stained rust-brown?
That colour comes from porphyrin in saliva, deposited by constant licking. It is a reliable sign of ongoing itching even if you have not caught your dog in the act. The staining is harmless in itself; the itch behind it is what needs addressing.
Can I give my dog a human antihistamine?
Some are used in dogs, but only at a veterinary dose, and they work in a minority of allergic dogs. Never dose from a human pack — several combination cold medicines contain decongestants or paracetamol that are dangerous to dogs. Ask your vet for the drug and the exact dose.
Do allergies in dogs ever go away?
Environmental allergies are usually managed rather than cured, and often follow a seasonal pattern you can anticipate. Flea allergy resolves completely with strict year-round flea control. Food allergy resolves by avoiding the protein once it has been properly identified.
