Rabbit not eating

PetPort EditorialLast reviewed

My rabbit has stopped eating — what do I do right now?

Treat it as an emergency at 12 hours, not 24. A rabbit that stops eating is usually already in or heading into gut stasis, which is fatal within a day or two. Check for droppings in the litter tray — no droppings alongside no food means go to a vet now, not in the morning.

General guidance for pet parents, not a diagnosis. Every animal is different — confirm anything that concerns you with your veterinarian.

What is happening

Appetite in a rabbit is the most important thing you can monitor. Because the gut must keep moving and because rabbits conceal pain, a refusal to eat is both an early warning and, quickly, an emergency in its own right. The cause is usually pain somewhere — teeth, gut, or elsewhere.

Signs to watch for

  • Hay and pellets untouched, and favourite greens refused
  • Litter tray with no droppings, or only a few small hard ones
  • Hunched posture, teeth grinding, reluctance to move, ears held back

What you can do

  • Count droppings — their absence is as important as the missing food
  • Offer strong-smelling fresh herbs such as coriander or mint to tempt a first bite
  • Contact a rabbit-experienced vet at 12 hours; do not plan to reassess in the morning

See a vet if

At 12 hours with no food, or immediately at any point if there are no droppings, the belly feels tight, or your rabbit is hunched and grinding its teeth.

In India specifically

Summer heat stress is a leading cause of appetite loss in Indian pet rabbits, and it is often missed because owners look for a disease instead. Rabbits do not pant efficiently and cannot cope with the temperatures much of India reaches from April to June. Provide shade, ventilation, a ceramic tile to lie on, and never house a rabbit on a sun-facing balcony.

Common questions

My rabbit is eating greens but not hay. Is that ok?

No — it is a meaningful warning. Rabbits with painful molars often continue eating soft food while avoiding hay, because hay demands the most grinding. A selective appetite that drops hay first is one of the earliest signs of dental disease and deserves a check.

Should I syringe-feed my rabbit?

Only if a vet has instructed you to and shown you how. Syringe-feeding a rabbit that is bloated, or doing it too fast, risks aspiration. Recovery formula is genuinely useful in stasis, but as part of veterinary treatment, not as a way to avoid the visit.

How do I find a rabbit-savvy vet in India?

Not every small-animal vet treats rabbits, and rabbit medicine differs substantially from cat and dog practice. Ask before an emergency: call local clinics and ask directly whether they see rabbits regularly. Rabbit owner groups in most Indian metros maintain informal lists.

Can heat make my rabbit stop eating?

Yes, and it is a common cause in India. Rabbits cope poorly above the low thirties and can go into stasis from heat stress alone. Move the rabbit to the coolest room, offer a ceramic tile or a wrapped frozen bottle to lie against, and never leave a rabbit in direct sun.
