How long can a hamster go without eating?
Not long. A hamster or gerbil that eats nothing for 24 hours is in trouble, and dehydration arrives faster still. Because they hoard food, an empty bowl proves nothing — check whether the hoard is growing and whether droppings are still being produced. Both, together, tell you what is really happening.

Hoarding makes appetite hard to judge in small rodents — food leaves the bowl whether or not it is eaten. The reliable indicators are droppings, weight, and whether the hoard is growing. A genuine fast in an animal this small becomes dangerous within a day.

Summer heat suppresses appetite in small rodents, and a cage in a room that reaches the mid-thirties creates genuine heat stress rather than a simple appetite dip. Keep the cage in the coolest part of the house, out of direct sun. Dry food also spoils quickly in Indian humidity — buy small quantities and store sealed, since a stale or mouldy mix is a common reason a hamster suddenly stops eating.

An empty bowl only proves the food moved. Hamsters pouch food and carry it to a hoard. Check for fresh droppings in the cage and look at the hoard — if it is growing while droppings are scarce, food is being stored rather than eaten.
Can overgrown teeth stop a hamster eating?
Yes. Rodent incisors grow continuously and can overgrow or misalign, making eating painful or impossible. Look for drooling, a wet chin, dropped food, or weight loss with a good appetite. A vet can trim them properly; this is not a home job.
How do I know if my hamster is drinking?
Mark the water bottle level with a marker pen and check it against the same time next day. Also press the sipper ball yourself to confirm water actually comes out — blocked or airlocked bottles are a common cause of a suddenly unwell small pet.
Should I hand-feed my hamster?
Offering a favourite food by hand to tempt a first bite is reasonable. Forcing food or syringing anything is not, without veterinary instruction — the aspiration risk in an animal this small is real. If tempting does not work within a few hours, go to a vet.
