Wounds and injuries in guinea pigs
PetPort EditorialLast reviewed
How do I treat a wound on my guinea pig?
Clean gently with saline and get it checked — do not apply human antiseptic creams, which are toxic once groomed off. Bite wounds from a cage mate look minor and abscess days later. Sore, ulcerated feet from wire flooring are the other common injury, and they need the flooring changed as well as treatment.
General guidance for pet parents, not a diagnosis. Every animal is different — confirm anything that concerns you with your veterinarian.

What is happening
Guinea pigs injure themselves in a few predictable ways: fights between cage mates, falls when handled by children, limbs caught in wire flooring, and pressure sores on the soles of the feet from wire or hard, dirty surfaces. Wounds also abscess readily, often days after they look healed.
Signs to watch for
- A visible cut, bite mark, or wet matted fur over a wound
- Limping, reluctance to move, or crying when handled
- Red, swollen or ulcerated foot pads, or a firm lump under the skin
What you can do
- Clean gently with sterile saline only — nothing else
- Separate fighting cage mates immediately
- Replace wire or mesh flooring with a solid base and soft, dry bedding
See a vet if
Any bite wound, any wound that is more than a superficial graze, any limping, or any swelling under the skin. Guinea pig abscesses are firm and need surgical treatment rather than antibiotics alone.
In India specifically
Wire-floored cages are still commonly sold in India for guinea pigs and rabbits and are the leading cause of bumblefoot seen here — a solid base with deep bedding prevents it entirely and costs very little. Humidity also keeps bedding damp for longer, which compounds the risk, so bedding needs changing more often through the monsoon than temperate guidance suggests.
Common questions
What is bumblefoot in guinea pigs?
It is a pressure sore on the sole of the foot, usually caused by wire or mesh flooring, or by standing on damp, dirty bedding. It starts as redness and progresses to painful ulceration and deep infection. Treatment is difficult once advanced, so the flooring must change too.
Can I use antiseptic liquid on a guinea pig wound?
No. Common household antiseptics are toxic to guinea pigs once groomed off and swallowed, and several damage the healing tissue directly. Sterile saline is the only thing to use at home; anything further should be prescribed by a vet.
My guinea pigs are fighting. What should I do?
Separate them immediately and check both for wounds, which are often hidden under fur. Fighting is common between unneutered males and after a new addition. Reintroduction needs careful, gradual work on neutral ground, and some pairs cannot be safely rehoused together.
Why do guinea pig abscesses need surgery?
Guinea pig pus is thick and does not drain the way a cat's does, so antibiotics alone rarely resolve an abscess — the capsule needs opening and flushing, or removing entirely. This is why any firm lump under the skin should be examined rather than watched.
