Hair loss in hamsters and gerbils

PetPort EditorialLast reviewed

Why is my hamster losing fur?

Hair loss in small rodents has a few recognisable patterns. Rubbing on cage bars or a wheel causes bald patches exactly where the contact happens. Mites cause flaking and itching. Symmetrical loss over the flanks in an older hamster is often hormonal, and age-related thinning is common past 18 months.

General guidance for pet parents, not a diagnosis. Every animal is different — confirm anything that concerns you with your veterinarian.

What is happening

Where the fur is missing usually tells you why. Friction bald spots sit exactly where the animal contacts something. Parasitic loss comes with flaking and scratching. Hormonal loss is symmetrical. Nose bald spots in gerbils are almost always mechanical, from burrowing against glass or bars.

Signs to watch for

  • Bald patches at contact points — hips, nose, or where it presses against the wheel
  • Flaking, scabs and visible scratching alongside thinning fur
  • Symmetrical thinning over both flanks, or general thinning in an older animal

What you can do

  • Check the enclosure for friction sources — a bare wheel, bars, a too-small hide
  • Provide deep bedding for burrowing; gerbils need real depth, not a shallow layer
  • Photograph the patches weekly so spread or regrowth is visible

See a vet if

There is flaking, scabbing or itching, the loss is spreading, or the skin looks red or thickened. Mites and fungal infection need a skin scrape to identify, and some spread to people.

In India specifically

Cages sold in India for hamsters and gerbils are frequently too small and come with a barred wheel, which produces exactly the friction pattern described here. Deep bedding is particularly important for gerbils and rarely provided. Humidity also favours fungal skin infection during the monsoon, so a new scaly patch in July is worth checking rather than watching.

Common questions

Why does my gerbil have a bald patch on its nose?

Almost always mechanical — gerbils burrow instinctively and repeatedly rub the nose against glass or bars when they cannot dig. The fix is much deeper bedding, ideally deep enough for real tunnels. It is a housing problem rather than a skin disease.

Is hair loss in an old hamster normal?

Some thinning past about 18 months is expected — hamsters are short-lived and age visibly. What is not normal is itching, flaking, scabbing or rapid spread. Age-related thinning is gradual, symmetrical and does not bother the animal.

Can hamster mites spread to humans?

Some can cause a temporary itchy rash on people, and ringworm — a fungus rather than a mite — spreads readily and persists. If anyone in the household develops circular itchy patches after handling the animal, mention it to both your vet and your doctor.

Could my hamster's wheel be causing bald patches?

Yes, and it is a common cause. A wheel that is too small forces an arched back, and a barred or mesh running surface abrades fur at the hips and feet. Use a solid-surface wheel large enough that the back stays flat while running.
