Why is my cat straining in the litter box?
Straining in the litter box is a genuine emergency in male cats. Feline lower urinary tract disease causes repeated squatting with little or no urine, crying in the tray, and blood-tinged drops. A blocked male cat can die within 24 to 48 hours. If nothing is coming out, go to a vet immediately.

What is happening
Feline lower urinary tract disease covers inflammation, crystals, stones and stress cystitis. All of them make urinating painful, and in male cats the narrow urethra can block completely, which is rapidly fatal.
Signs to watch for
- Going to the tray repeatedly and producing only drops, or nothing
- Crying, straining or turning to lick while trying to urinate
- Blood-tinged urine, or urinating outside the tray on cool smooth surfaces
What you can do
- Get a male cat producing nothing to a vet immediately — do not wait overnight
- Increase water intake with wet food, a water fountain and extra bowls
- Give one litter tray per cat plus one, kept clean and away from noise
See a vet if
Immediately, if your cat is straining and passing nothing, crying, vomiting or lethargic. This is one of the few true same-hour emergencies in cats.

Cats drink less than owners expect, and Indian summer heat compounds it — vets here see a clear seasonal rise in blocked cats from April to June. If your cat eats only dry food, adding wet food or water to meals is the single highest-value change you can make. Know your nearest 24-hour clinic before you need it: a blocked cat cannot wait for morning opening hours.

Is my cat constipated or blocked?
The posture looks the same, which is why this is dangerous. Assume a urinary blockage until proven otherwise, particularly in a male cat. A blocked cat is an emergency within hours; constipation is not. Any vet can tell them apart in minutes by feeling the bladder.
Why is my cat urinating outside the litter box?
Cats associate the tray with pain when urinating hurts, so they try elsewhere — often on cool, smooth surfaces like tiles or a bathtub. It is a medical sign far more often than a behavioural one. Rule out FLUTD before treating it as a house-training problem.
Can stress cause urinary problems in cats?
Yes. Feline idiopathic cystitis is genuinely stress-driven — a new pet, building work, a house move or a change of routine can trigger it. It causes real inflammation and real pain, and it needs veterinary treatment alongside reducing the stressor.
Does dry food cause FLUTD?
Dry food is not a direct cause, but a dry-only diet lowers total water intake, which concentrates urine and raises the risk of crystals. Adding wet food is one of the most effective preventive changes owners can make, and it is more reliable than trying to make a cat drink more.
