Wet tail in hamsters

PetPort EditorialLast reviewed

What is wet tail and how fast does it kill?

Wet tail is severe infectious diarrhoea in hamsters, most often in young Syrians recently home from a pet shop. The tail and rear are soaked, the hamster hunches, stops eating and becomes weak. It can kill within 48 hours through dehydration, so it needs same-day veterinary treatment — not a shop remedy.

General guidance for pet parents, not a diagnosis. Every animal is different — confirm anything that concerns you with your veterinarian.

What is happening

Wet tail is a bacterial enteritis triggered largely by stress — transport, a new home, weaning, overcrowding. Young Syrian hamsters in the first weeks after purchase are the classic case. The diarrhoea causes rapid fluid loss, and a hamster has almost no reserve to lose.

Signs to watch for

  • Wet, soiled fur around the tail and rear, with a strong smell
  • Hunched posture, unwillingness to move, fur standing up
  • Not eating or drinking, sunken eyes, and rapid weight loss

What you can do

  • Get to a vet the same day — this is not treatable with a pet-shop remedy
  • Keep the hamster warm and quiet, and minimise all handling
  • Isolate from any other hamster and disinfect the cage thoroughly

See a vet if

Immediately. Wet tail is fatal within roughly 48 hours untreated, and hamsters dehydrate faster than owners expect. Same-day treatment genuinely changes the outcome.

In India specifically

Hamsters in Indian pet markets are often weaned early and kept in crowded conditions, which is exactly the stress load that precipitates wet tail — the first two weeks at home are the highest-risk period. Small-mammal-experienced vets are concentrated in the metros, so find out before you buy which local clinic sees hamsters; you may not have time to search once symptoms start.

Common questions

Is any wet bottom on a hamster wet tail?

No. Loose stool from too much fresh vegetable is common and much milder — the hamster stays bright, active and eating. Wet tail involves a soaked rear, a hunched miserable hamster, and refusal of food. If the hamster is dull as well as dirty, treat it as the emergency.

Can wet tail be cured?

It can be treated successfully when caught early, with veterinary antibiotics and fluid support. The outlook worsens sharply once the hamster is weak and dehydrated, which is why the same-day rule matters so much. Delayed cases frequently do not survive.

Why do new hamsters get wet tail so often?

Because stress is the trigger and a newly bought hamster has just had a great deal of it — separation, transport, a strange cage, and often overcrowding at the source. Give a new hamster a quiet week with minimal handling to settle, and watch the rear daily.

Can wet tail spread to my other hamsters?

Yes. Isolate the affected hamster immediately, use separate feeding equipment, wash hands between animals, and disinfect the cage thoroughly. Syrian hamsters should be housed alone in any case, which reduces the risk substantially.
