Pet birds in India — and which ones are legal
PetPort Editorial9 profiles
Which pet birds can you legally keep in India?
Exotic species such as the Budgerigar, Cockatiel and Lovebird are legal to keep. Native birds are not: the Indian Ringneck Parakeet is protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and keeping one is an offence. Several exotic parrots are CITES-listed and need documented captive-bred provenance — each profile below says which.
General guidance for pet parents, not a diagnosis. Every animal is different — confirm anything that concerns you with your veterinarian.

Budgerigar
ToyThe budgie — small, hardy Australian parakeet and the world's commonest pet bird.
- Temperament
- sociable, chatty, curious
- Origin
- Australia
- Climate
- Comfortable in most of India; shade, airflow and never a closed balcony in summer.
- Grooming
- Daily bathing dish or a light mist; nails and beak checked by a vet.
- Exercise
- Several hours out of the cage daily; the widest cage you can fit.
- Watch for
- fatty liver from an all-seed diet; scaly face mites; tumours
In India: Legal to keep in India (an exotic species). Seed-only feeding is the biggest killer — pellets plus fresh greens should be most of the diet.
Cockatiel
SmallCrested Australian parrot — whistles, learns tunes and bonds hard with its person.
- Temperament
- affectionate, gentle, vocal
- Origin
- Australia
- Climate
- Tolerates Indian heat with shade and water; keep out of kitchen fumes.
- Grooming
- Regular misting; they produce fine feather dust, so ventilate the room.
- Exercise
- 3–4 hours out daily, with foraging toys.
- Watch for
- night frights; respiratory disease from feather dust; egg binding in hens
In India: Legal to keep. Non-stick cookware fumes are lethal to birds — never keep a cockatiel in or near the kitchen.
Indian Ringneck Parakeet
Small · Native to IndiaBright green native parakeet with a ring collar and a real talking ability.
- Temperament
- intelligent, independent, loud
- Origin
- Indian subcontinent and Africa
- Climate
- Native to the climate; needs shade, water and protection from monsoon damp.
- Grooming
- Daily bathing; heavy chewers need constant fresh branches.
- Exercise
- Large aviary space and hours of enrichment.
- Watch for
- feather plucking from boredom; psittacosis; beak overgrowth
In India: ILLEGAL to keep as a pet in India. The rose-ringed parakeet is a native species protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 — capture, sale and possession are all offences. If you have one, contact your state forest department or a licensed rescue.
African Grey Parrot
MediumThe most accomplished talking parrot, with the cognition of a young child.
- Temperament
- highly intelligent, sensitive, bonded
- Origin
- West and Central Africa
- Climate
- Warm and humid suits them; avoid dry heat and direct sun.
- Grooming
- Frequent bathing; a powder-down bird, so ventilation matters.
- Exercise
- Hours of foraging and problem-solving daily — boredom is a medical risk.
- Watch for
- feather plucking; calcium deficiency; aspergillosis
In India: CITES Appendix I. Import is banned and legal ownership requires documented captive-bred provenance — ask for papers, and treat their absence as a red flag.
Lovebird
ToySmall, intense African parrot, usually kept in bonded pairs.
- Temperament
- feisty, affectionate, territorial
- Origin
- Africa and Madagascar
- Climate
- Handles Indian warmth well with shade and fresh water.
- Grooming
- Bathing dish; plenty of shreddable material.
- Exercise
- Flight space and constant chew toys.
- Watch for
- egg binding; feather plucking; aggression injuries
In India: Legal to keep (exotic). Widely bred in India — pick a breeder who hand-feeds and can show you the parents.
Finch
ToyTiny, busy aviary birds kept to watch rather than to handle.
- Temperament
- active, flighty, social
- Origin
- Worldwide (zebra and society finches are the common pets)
- Climate
- Hardy across India; needs shade and protection from monsoon wind.
- Grooming
- Provide a shallow bath dish; they bathe themselves daily.
- Exercise
- A long flight cage — they fly horizontally, so width beats height.
- Watch for
- air-sac mites; egg binding; obesity on seed-only diets
In India: Keep in groups; a single finch is a distressed finch. Native Indian finches (munias) are protected — buy only recognised exotic species.
Canary
ToyYellow songbird kept for the male's singing; a hands-off, watch-and-listen pet.
- Temperament
- independent, shy, melodic
- Origin
- Canary Islands
- Climate
- Prefers moderate temperatures — struggles above 32°C without a cooled room.
- Grooming
- Daily bath dish keeps the plumage in condition.
- Exercise
- Wide cage for flight; they don't need handling.
- Watch for
- air-sac mites; feather cysts; moult stress
In India: House males singly — two males in one cage will fight, and the song stops when they do.
Macaw
LargeVery large, very loud, very long-lived parrot — a 50-year commitment.
- Temperament
- bold, affectionate, demanding
- Origin
- Central and South America
- Climate
- Tropical bird; Indian warmth suits it, but it needs shade and humidity.
- Grooming
- Frequent bathing; heavy chewing wood must be replaced constantly.
- Exercise
- Aviary-scale space and several hours of interaction a day.
- Watch for
- feather plucking; proventricular dilatation disease; beak/foot injuries
In India: CITES-listed; legal ownership needs captive-bred documentation. The call carries for hundreds of metres — genuinely unsuited to an apartment.
Cockatoo
MediumCrested, intensely social parrot — the most affectionate and most demanding of them all.
- Temperament
- needy, loud, highly intelligent
- Origin
- Australia, Indonesia and New Guinea
- Climate
- Warm climates suit them; shade and daily bathing in Indian summers.
- Grooming
- Very dusty birds — ventilation and frequent misting.
- Exercise
- Constant enrichment; they cannot be left alone all day.
- Watch for
- severe feather plucking; psittacine beak and feather disease; separation anxiety
In India: CITES-listed and rehomed more often than almost any parrot — please consider a rescue bird before buying.
