Goldfish
ToyCold-water carp that grows far larger than the bowl it's usually sold with.
- Temperament
- peaceful, social, messy
- Origin
- China
- Climate
- 18–24°C — genuinely a cold-water fish, and struggles in an unchilled Indian summer tank.
- Grooming
- Heavy waste producers: strong filtration and weekly 25% water changes.
- Exercise
- 75 litres for the first fish, +40 for each additional one. Never a bowl.
- Watch for
- swim bladder disorder; ich; ammonia burn in small tanks
In India: The classic 'fishbowl gift' kills them slowly. If the room goes past 28°C in summer, a goldfish is the wrong fish for that room.
Betta
ToyThe Siamese fighting fish — brilliant fins, tolerates warm water, must live alone.
- Temperament
- territorial, curious, interactive
- Origin
- Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam
- Climate
- 24–28°C, which most Indian rooms hold naturally — one of the few fish helped by the climate.
- Grooming
- Filtered 20-litre minimum, gentle flow, weekly partial water change.
- Exercise
- Floating plants and resting ledges near the surface.
- Watch for
- fin rot; ich; constipation from overfeeding
In India: Never two males in one tank, and never in the unfiltered cups they're sold in — the label 'fighting fish' is a housing instruction.
Guppy
ToySmall, hardy, endlessly colourful livebearer — the classic beginner's fish.
- Temperament
- peaceful, active, social
- Origin
- South America and the Caribbean
- Climate
- 22–28°C, comfortable in most Indian homes without a heater.
- Grooming
- Filtered tank, weekly 25% water change.
- Exercise
- Keep in groups; 40 litres suits a small colony.
- Watch for
- fin rot; ich; inbreeding weakness in cheap stock
In India: They breed relentlessly — a mixed-sex tank becomes overcrowded within months. Plan for it or keep one sex.
Angelfish
SmallTall, elegant cichlid from the Amazon; peaceful until it pairs off.
- Temperament
- semi-aggressive when breeding, graceful, intelligent
- Origin
- Amazon basin
- Climate
- 24–29°C — Indian room temperature usually suits them.
- Grooming
- Tall tank (45cm+), good filtration, weekly water changes.
- Exercise
- Vertical swimming space and tall plants or driftwood.
- Watch for
- hole-in-the-head disease; ich; fin nipping injuries
In India: Don't mix with guppies or long-finned fish — the fins get eaten.
Molly
ToySturdy livebearer that comes in black, white and dalmatian patterns.
- Temperament
- peaceful, active, social
- Origin
- Central America
- Climate
- 24–28°C; tolerates a wide range.
- Grooming
- Filtered tank; mollies appreciate slightly hard water.
- Exercise
- Group of 4+ in 60 litres or more.
- Watch for
- shimmies (from soft or cold water); ich; fungal infection
In India: Hard tap water suits them in most Indian cities — no need to soften it.
Koi
MediumOrnamental carp bred for colour, reaching 60cm+ and living for decades.
- Temperament
- peaceful, sociable, long-lived
- Origin
- Japan
- Climate
- 15–28°C. Shade over the pond is essential in an Indian summer.
- Grooming
- Pond filtration and aeration; regular partial water changes.
- Exercise
- A pond, never a tank — 4,000 litres and up for a small group.
- Watch for
- koi herpes virus; anchor worm; oxygen crash in hot weather
In India: Summer heat drops the water's oxygen right when the fish need most — a shaded pond plus an aerator is the difference between a hobby and a loss.
Oscar
SmallLarge, boisterous South American cichlid with genuine personality.
- Temperament
- bold, intelligent, aggressive
- Origin
- Amazon basin
- Climate
- 23–28°C, comfortable in Indian rooms.
- Grooming
- Very messy: over-filter and change 30% of the water weekly.
- Exercise
- 250+ litres for one adult; they redecorate the tank themselves.
- Watch for
- hole-in-the-head disease; bloat from feeder fish; injury from tank mates
In India: Grows from a 5cm pet-shop juvenile to 30cm+ in a year — the tank you buy must fit the adult, not the fish in the bag.
Discus
SmallThe 'king of the aquarium' — round, spectacular and genuinely difficult.
- Temperament
- shy, peaceful, social
- Origin
- Amazon basin
- Climate
- 28–30°C, held steady — one of the few fish that wants Indian summer warmth.
- Grooming
- Pristine soft water; large, frequent water changes are the whole hobby.
- Exercise
- Group of 5–6 in a tall 250-litre tank.
- Watch for
- hexamita; gill flukes; stress from poor water
In India: Not a beginner's fish. Municipal water usually needs treating (RO or conditioning) before it's fit for discus.
