Why is my hamster's cheek swollen or stuck?
A cheek pouch that stays full is either impacted or everted. Impaction happens when sticky or sharp food gets lodged; eversion is when the pouch lining turns inside out and hangs from the mouth as a pink mass. Neither resolves on its own, and neither should be pulled at home.

What is happening
Hamsters carry food in elastic cheek pouches that normally empty completely. Sticky foods, sharp fragments and anything mouldy can lodge and become infected. Occasionally the pouch lining prolapses outward, which looks alarming and needs prompt treatment to save the tissue.
Signs to watch for
- One or both cheeks staying swollen long after the hamster has hoarded
- Pawing repeatedly at the face, or a reduced appetite
- A pink or red fleshy mass protruding from the side of the mouth
What you can do
- Never offer sticky foods — bread, chocolate, sweets or anything that clumps
- Avoid cotton wool and fluffy bedding, which tangle in the pouch
- Check that a hamster empties its hoard normally in the first days at home

The swelling persists more than a day, there is any protruding tissue, or your hamster is off food. A vet can empty and flush a pouch safely; attempting it at home usually causes injury.
In India specifically
Cotton-wool style bedding is still sold as standard in many Indian pet shops and is a leading cause of pouch impaction here — paper-based bedding is the safe substitute and is available online in most cities. Humidity is the other local factor: a hoard of fresh food spoils within a day or two in Indian summer conditions, so weekly hoard checks should be more frequent in hot months.
Common questions
How do I know if it's a full pouch or a swelling?
A normally stuffed pouch empties within hours, usually at the hamster's hoard. Anything that stays swollen overnight, is firm to look at, or comes with face-pawing and reduced eating is not a normal hoard and needs a vet.
Can I empty my hamster's cheek pouch myself?
No. The pouch lining is thin and tears easily, and everting it requires technique and usually sedation. Home attempts frequently turn an impaction into a torn or prolapsed pouch. This is a straightforward job for a vet and a difficult one for an owner.
Is cotton wool bedding safe for hamsters?
No. Fluffy cotton-wool style bedding tangles in cheek pouches and around limbs, and is not digestible if swallowed. Plain paper-based bedding is safe and lets hamsters burrow, which they need. It remains widely sold despite the risk.
Why does my hamster hoard food it never eats?
Hoarding is entirely normal and instinctive. The practical concern is spoilage — check the hoard weekly and remove anything damp, fresh or mouldy, while leaving the dry seed. Removing the whole hoard causes stress and it will simply be rebuilt.
