Sudden behaviour changes in dogs
PetPort EditorialLast reviewed
Why has my dog's behaviour suddenly changed?
A behaviour that appeared in days or weeks is a symptom, not a personality change. Pain is the first thing to rule out — dogs guard, snap and withdraw when something hurts. After that, the usual drivers are fear, boredom and an unpredictable routine. Training comes after a vet check, never before it.
General guidance for pet parents, not a diagnosis. Every animal is different — confirm anything that concerns you with your veterinarian.
Quick reference

|---|---|
| Red flag age | Any sudden change in a dog over seven years |
| Never use | Punishment, alpha rolls or shock collars — these escalate aggression |
| Look for a trainer who uses | Positive reinforcement, and who asks for the vet report first |
| Typical settling time | Four to eight weeks of consistent routine, if pain is excluded |

See a vet if
There is any biting or snapping, or the change came on suddenly in an older dog — that can be pain or a neurological problem.
In India specifically
Festival season is the single biggest behavioural trigger in India. Diwali crackers, and loud processions through much of the year, can turn a settled dog into a noise-phobic one in a single night, and the fear generalises fast. Prepare a quiet interior room with the windows shut and familiar sound before the season, and speak to your vet in advance if your dog has panicked before.
Common questions
My dog growls when I touch him. Is he becoming aggressive?
A growl is a warning, and warnings are useful — a dog that growls is choosing not to bite. Never punish it, or you remove the warning and keep the bite. Growling on touch most often means pain. Book a vet examination before any training work.
Why does my dog destroy things only when I leave?
Destruction confined to your absence, usually with pacing, drooling or howling in the first thirty minutes, points to separation distress rather than misbehaviour. It responds to gradual departure training, not to correction. A behaviourist referral is worth it — this rarely resolves on its own.
Can neutering fix my dog's aggression?
Sometimes, for specific hormone-driven behaviours in intact males. It does nothing for fear-based or pain-driven aggression, which are far more common. Discuss the actual behaviour with your vet rather than treating neutering as a general fix.
My old dog barks at night and seems confused. Why?
Night pacing, disorientation and barking at nothing in a senior dog can be canine cognitive dysfunction, the dog equivalent of dementia. It is manageable when picked up early. It can also be pain or failing eyesight, so it needs a proper senior examination.
