My dog is not eating — how long can I wait?
A puppy that refuses one meal, or an adult dog that refuses two, needs attention. A single skipped meal in an otherwise bright adult happens and is usually nothing. What changes the picture is appetite loss combined with vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy — that combination needs a same-day vet, not a wait-and-see.

In India specifically
Summer appetite loss is normal and seasonal across most of India — many dogs eat noticeably less from April to June and regain it when temperatures drop. Shift meals to the cooler ends of the day before assuming illness. Separately, tick fever (ehrlichiosis and babesiosis) is a very common cause of genuine appetite loss here, so mention any recent tick exposure to your vet; it is diagnosed on a simple blood test.

How long can a dog go without eating?
A healthy adult dog can manage a day or two without lasting harm, provided it is drinking. Puppies, toy breeds, seniors and any dog with a known illness have far less margin — hours, not days. Water refusal is always more urgent than food refusal.
My dog eats treats but refuses his regular food. Is he sick?
Often not. A dog that enthusiastically takes treats usually has a working appetite and is holding out for something better, particularly if table food has been offered before. Stop the extras, put the meal down for twenty minutes, then remove it. If he refuses two meals with no treats available, see a vet.
Can hot weather make my dog eat less?
Yes, and it is common through the Indian summer. Dogs genuinely eat less in heat. Feed early morning and after sunset when it is cooler, keep water constantly available, and watch for lethargy or heavy panting, which point to heat stress rather than a simple appetite dip.
Should I force-feed my dog?
No. Syringe-feeding a dog that is nauseous risks food entering the airway, and it teaches an aversion to the food you are trying to reintroduce. If your dog genuinely needs nutritional support, that is a veterinary decision.
