Dental disease in dogs
PetPort EditorialLast reviewed
How do I know if my dog has dental disease?
Bad breath is the first sign, and the most ignored one. Most dogs show dental disease by three years old: plaque hardens into tartar, gums recede, and bacteria from the mouth reach the heart and kidneys. Brown tartar at the gumline, bleeding gums or chewing on one side all mean it has already started.
General guidance for pet parents, not a diagnosis. Every animal is different — confirm anything that concerns you with your veterinarian.
Quick reference
| Affected by age three | Around 80% of dogs show some dental disease |
|---|---|
| Earliest sign | Persistent bad breath |
| Never use | Human toothpaste — xylitol and fluoride are toxic to dogs |
| Brushing frequency | Ideally daily, realistically three or more times a week |
| Avoid | Hard bones, antlers and hooves — a common cause of fractured teeth |
| Professional scaling | Requires general anaesthesia; 'anaesthesia-free' cleaning only polishes the visible surface |
What is happening
Most dogs show dental disease by three years old. Plaque hardens into tartar, gums recede, and the infection can reach the heart and kidneys.
Signs to watch for
- Strong bad breath — the earliest and most ignored sign
- Brown tartar at the gumline, red or bleeding gums
- Dropping food, chewing on one side, or pawing at the mouth
What you can do
- Brush with dog toothpaste — never human toothpaste — a few times a week
- Offer vet-approved dental chews rather than hard bones
- Have the mouth checked at every annual visit
See a vet if
A tooth is loose or broken, the face is swollen, or your dog has stopped eating properly — a scaling under anaesthesia may be needed.
In India specifically
Many Indian dogs are fed home food with rice and roti, which is soft and leaves residue at the gumline, and Indian clinics report dental disease presenting earlier as a result. Anaesthesia for scaling is now routine at most well-equipped urban clinics — ask whether pre-anaesthetic bloodwork is included, and whether a vet stays with your dog through recovery.
Common questions
Is anaesthesia-free dog teeth cleaning safe?
It is largely cosmetic. Disease sits below the gumline, and that area cannot be cleaned or examined in a conscious dog. The visible surface looks better while the actual problem continues underneath. Modern veterinary anaesthesia with pre-operative bloodwork is a reasonable risk for most dogs.
Do dental chews and bones actually clean teeth?
Vet-approved dental chews help modestly and are a useful supplement. Hard bones, antlers and hooves do more harm than good — fractured teeth from bone chewing are one of the commonest dental emergencies. Nothing replaces brushing.
My dog's breath is terrible but he eats fine. Should I still act?
Yes. Dogs eat through significant dental pain because refusing food is not an option their instincts allow. Normal appetite does not mean a comfortable mouth. Persistent bad breath alone justifies a dental examination.
How much does a dog dental scaling cost in India?
It varies widely by city and by whether extractions and pre-anaesthetic bloodwork are needed, so ask your clinic for a written estimate covering anaesthesia, the procedure, any extractions and medication. Prices differ enough between clinics that it is worth comparing two.
